There will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks in Total.

  • Q.1 - Q.25 (25 questions) carry one mark each
  • Q.26 - Q.55 (30 questions) carry two marks each
  • Q.56 - Q.65 belong to General Aptitude (GA)
  • Q.56 - Q.60 (5 questions) carry 1 mark each and questions
  • Q.61 - Q.65 (5 questions) carry 2-marks each
  • Q.48 - Q.51 (2 pairs) are common data questions
  • Question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) are linked answer questions

Note: The answer to the second question of the linked answer questions depends on the answer to the first question of the pair. If the first question is wrongly answered or unattempt, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be considered.

MARKS DIVION SCHEME

  • For Q.1 - Q.25 and Q.56 - Q.60, wrong answer results into 1/3 marks deduction.
  • For Q.26 - Q.51 and Q.61 - Q.65, wrong answer results into 2/3 marks deduction.
  • The question pairs (Q.52, Q.53), and (Q.54, Q.55) have given answers. So, only wrong answer will be resulting of negative marking. i.e. for Q.52 and Q.54, wrong v answer results into 2/3 marks deduction.
  • No negative marking takes place between Q.53 and Q.55.
  • 15% of the total marks weightage is by Engineering Mathematics questions (excluding General Aptitude section) in all the papers.

There are two types for GATE Exam:

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) type question carry 1 or 2 marks each and will have a choice of four options, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).

Numerical Answer Questions (MCQ) type question also have 1 or 2 marks with no choices. Real number will be the answer for these questions, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad.

DESIGN OF PROBLEMS

The questions are designed in that wau so that following abilities can be considered:

  • Recall: facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline are some base of the paper. The candidate needs to have memory like an elephant to solve the problems in given time
  • Comprehension: This will test the basic understanding of concepts of students.
  • Application: For quick answers, candidates need to have the understanding of computation or logical reasoning.
  • Analysis and Synthesis: A representation of data in images and diagrams will be there in these questions. There can be requirement of comparison of two or more pieces of information for a Synthesis question.

Candidate can get confused by reading out the problems.

NEGATIVE MARKING DIVISION

Negative marking takes place if the wrong answer is checked with deduction of 1/3 mark. For MCQ with 2-mark each, there will be 2/3 mark deduction for a wrong answer. However, numerical answer type questions are exempted from negative marking.

Important Things to Notice in Examination:

  • Virtual Calculator: Online scientific calculator is available for students.
  • Score card validity is 3 years:GATE Score is valid up to 3 years
  • GATE for International Candidates:Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri-Lanka, Ethiopia & United Arab Emirates ( U.A.E ), these are some places where GATE Exams are conducted.
  • Analysis and Synthesis: A representation of data in images and diagrams will be there in these questions. There can be requirement of comparison of two or more pieces of information for a Synthesis question.

PSU’S THROUGH GATE-2018

Since GATE-2012 many Public sector undertaking companies signed MOU with GATE committee to recruit GATE qualified candidate without any other written examination. GATE-2017 is now right gateway for aspirants to join reputed PSU’s to their career in core engineering field. However, in past three years, many companies of MAHARATNA PSU , NAVRATNA PSU and MINIRATNA PSU also took participation with GATE committee.

ELIGIBILITY IN GATE-2018 EXAM

To appear for GATE exam candidate must have any one of the following qualifications:

  • a) Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and those who are in the final year or who has completed their degree on or before 2017.
  • b) Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and those who are in the final year or who has completed their degree on or before 2017.
  • c) Candidates in (Post B.Sc.) integrated master degree in Engineering/ Technology four year programmed are eligible but those candidate must complete their degree by year 2018. The second or higher year can write GATE-2017 exam.
  • d) The students of third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology can also apply for GATE-2017 exam. But those candidates must complete their degree on or before 2017.
  • e) Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses will also be eligible.

If you possess any qualification equivalent to the above, still then you are eligible to apply for GATE-2017.

Note:

1. GATE Aspirant who has backlog in any subjects should upload mark sheet of final semester or obtain deceleration of principal from their respective college or institute.
2. Final year students also mandatory to obtain deceleration of principal from their institution to complete online application process.

GATE-2018 ONLINE APPLICATION FEE

For GATE 2018 payments would have to be made through online by selecting either SBI I-collect or Axis Bank I-Connect, or using any bank Debit Card/Credit Card, Net Banking and e-challan facilities ONLY. Additional charges will be applicable as per the rule of the bank from where the money is being transferred.

GATE-2018 ONLINE APPLICATION PROCESSING SYSTEM (GOAPS)

An online interface is provided for your interaction with the GATE Office. With this interface you can

  • 1. Apply for the examination online.
  • 2. Upload photograph, signature and other documents like graduation certificate/ certificate from Principal, caste certificate (if applicable) etc.
  • 3. Pay the application fee through net-banking.
  • 4. You can Check the application status form
  • 5. Contact the Zonal GATE Offices in case of any queries/problems.
  • 6. Download Admit Card.
  • 7. View your answers, marks and GATE score.

POINT TO BE NOTED WHILE FILLING ONLINE APPLICATION FOR GATE-2018

An online interface is provided for your interaction with the GATE Office. With this interface you can

  • 1. Register yourself with your valid/working E-Mail ID and Mobile Number because all information related GATE-2018 will be sent on these addresses only.
  • 2. You must remember your Enrolment ID and password or never share your personal information with any of your relative or friend for security reasons.
  • 3. Provide all correct information as mentioned on your educational certificates to avoid rejection in your application form. Also mention your Area PIN Code.
  • 4. Upload your high quality, white background and passport size picture only.
  • 5. You must upload your valid I-D proof during online application process. It is mandatory to show same I-D Proof in the examination hall. So it is suggested to upload that I-D proof which you always keep into your pocket/Wallet/Purse.
  • 6. Keep ready your credit/debit/I-collect/I-connect details before starting your online application process.
  • 7. Carefully check your information before confirm and Final submit of your application because no further changes accepted by the GOAPS.
  • 8. Not to forget to upload your certificate from principal/degree certificate/category certificate (if any).
  • 9. After final submission of online application do not forget to save PDF copy of same.
  • 10. It is not required to send printed copy of online application for GATE-2018 to the zonal office.

Recruitment in PSU’s

Different PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) like ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited), NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation), IOCL (Indian Oil Corporation Limited), BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited) have shifted their interest towards GATE Score. All above mentioned companies have recruited Management Trainee/ Executive Trainee through GATE-2013 exam only. It is expected that all companies will consider GATE Score for Recruitment.

Research Institutes

GATE qualified candidates in the Engineering discipline are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship(JRF) & Senior Research Fellowship(SRF) in CSIR Laboratories. JRF & SRF are stipend bases fellowships. The stipend amount generally lies between Rs 15000/- to Rs 20000/- for CSIR laboratories.

Stipend in BARC

BARC, being one of the reputated PSUs, has kept a particular GATE Score to their own courses. It is also stipend based course with average stipend of Rs 15000/- to Rs 20000/- for GATE qualified students. Some self-supporting courses are also proposed for valid GATE Score Card in BARC.

Scholarships in ME/MTech

To enhance/promote the master education in India the Scholarship/ Assistance ship is likely to be Rs 11,800/- per month is paid from MHRD to GATE qualified student. It is financial help for candidates so that they can easily afford their needs during their course and thesis work.

Library Funds

The candidates who get admission in various universities (approved by UGC or AICET) will be eligible for library funds to accommodate their needs of Books/Notes/CDs during their masters in technology/engineering. The deserving student will be getting an allowances of Rs 5000/- per year.

Master in Technology/Engineering

It is an opportunity for students to earn Masters in Technology degree in their area of interest subjects, for those students who they have missed their train of IIT’s , IIIT’s and NIT’s in their JEE Advance or JEE or AIEE exam.
